Postdoctoral Researcher in Convective-Scale Climate Modelling

We seek a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in numerical modelling to join the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project First Rains. In this role, you will join a team exploring how state-of-the-art kilometre-scale atmospheric models may unlock new forecast skill in predicting the onset of rainfall seasons in monsoon and subtropical regions. The project has UK and southern African partners working to fast-track onset forecasts with sufficient skill to support decision-making in rainfall-sensitive sectors.

You will manage your own academic research including developing idealized convective-scale atmospheric model ensemble experiments. You will contribute to analysis and interpretation of ensemble experiment output alongside kilometre-scale simulations from other global modelling centres. With the team, you will engage project partners in developing these experiments and maintaining communication on project science progress. Leadership and collaboration in the preparation of research publications is a key responsibility.

The successful applicant will hold, or be close to completion of a relevant PhD/DPhil and a level of experience commensurate to your relevant career stage. This experience should be evidenced by high-quality research publications, technical publications, or open-source code repositories. Expertise in atmospheric convection, tropical, subtropical or monsoonal climate dynamics is desirable, although a background in fluid dynamics, astrophysics, or related physical sciences will be welcomed. Experience configuring numerical models on HPC systems is essential. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, represent the research team at scientific meetings, and discuss results with potential users of forecast information is necessary.

The candidate will join the Climate Lab in the School of Geography and the Environment, a vibrant research group working with climate models, convective- scale simulations, and field observations. Your career development will be prioritised and supported through the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship network and development opportunities offered by both the School and the University.
