　　The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

　　Division

　　The Hällberg laboratory is offering a stimulating, interactive international environment. We are part of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the world ́s leading medical universities. The lab is located in the recently opened Biomedicum, a state-of-the-art research building.

　　We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow interested in studying the structural cell biology of mitochondrial genome separation and segregation. The project is part of a multi-disciplinary collaboration – financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation – between the groups of Alexey Amunts at Stockholm University and the groups of Joanna Rorbach and Martin Hällberg at the Karolinska Institutet.

　　Duties

　　The project aims to structurally and biochemically characterize the ribosomal maturation process. The Hällberg subproject in the collaboration focuses on the very earliest mito-rRNA maturation steps that occur co-transcriptionally and involves the early processing steps and their coordination with binding of ribosomal proteins and maturation factors. Main techniques involved are electron microscopy (cryo-EM), macromolecular crystallography and biochemistry. In the project, we will utilize both national and international synchrotron sources and cryo-EM facilities. Furthermore for cryo-EM, we will utilise Karolinska Institutet’s new 3D-EM facility with a Krios 300 kV (K3 detector) and Talos 120C to be installed during the autumn of 2019 with a cryo-FIB/ SEM to be installed in the end of the year.

　　Entry requirements

　　We are looking for highly motivated, independent and driven candidates. The successful applicant will have a background either in structural biology or RNA/RNA-protein biochemistry willing to learn or develop skills in state-of-the-art techniques for studying the structural biochemistry of protein-RNA complexes. A documented ability to independently carry out experimental research projects is required, as are good communication skills in spoken and written English.

　　Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

　　A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

　　To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

　　The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

　　Type of scholarship

　　The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
