Applications are invited for a research assistant post, to join a team working with Dr. Rebecca Berrens at the newly established Institute, IDRM, Oxford.

We are interested in the functional role of transposable elements in cell fate decision during early development and in cellular regeneration. The role of transposable elements (TEs) in gene regulation during cell fate decision has largely remained elusive. Most TEs have lost their ability to insert additional copies into new genomic locations, however TEs make up 50% of the mammalian genome and harbour regulatory elements that can affect gene expression. Consequently, TEs are kept transcriptionally silent in most somatic cells by epigenetic modifications (Berrens et al., Cell Stem Cell, 2017). But these modifications are lifted during cell fate decision, hence TEs are expressed. Despite progress in our understanding of TE expression, a systematic analysis of the role of locus-specific TE expression during cell fate decision has yet to be performed. Moreover, potential patterns of altered TE expression in disease states are yet to be investigated.

We aim to interrogate the role of transposable elements in cell fate decision by combining CELLO-seq (Berrens et al., Nature Biotechnology, 2022) - our novel single cell long read sequencing technology - with state-of-the-art gene editing technologies.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic researcher to join our team and to work alongside Dr Berrens, who is further developing and adapting technologies like single-cell long read transcriptomics, imaging and genome- editing approaches. You will work on embryonic stem cells as well as models of cellular differentiation and will be involved in the continued effort of adapting these state-of-the-art technologies to interrogate the role of Transposable elements in cell fate decision.

The post is ideally suited for a candidate with an interest in developing a career that involves working at the interface of Developmental Biology, Immunology and Regenerative Medicine.

This post is full time and fixed term until 31 July 2024.
